    3. the art of writing beautifully: He studied calligraphy when he was a young man.
    4. a script, usually cursive, although sometimes angular, produced chiefly by brush, esp. Chinese, Japanese, or Arabic writing of high aesthetic value
    5. Fine Arts. line or a group of lines either derived from or resembling letter forms and characterized by qualities usually associated with cursive writing, esp. that produced with a brush or pen.

[Origin: 1605–15; < Gk kalligraphía beautiful writing. See calli-, -graphy>

Calligraphy has a rich and ancient history yet continues to flourish in these modern, technologically advanced times. It is the ultimate in tasteful choices for weddings, events, invitations, logo design, commissioned art, certificates, stationery, testimonials, and anywhere the written word is glorified.

As computers have become a part of every aspect of our lives, some would say that hand calligraphy is old fashioned and a relic from days gone by. Calligraphy is unique in that computer fonts and home printers have made it highly prized rather than a quaint but fading artform. There are endless fonts to be had at a mere keystroke yet there is nothing special or impressive about printing with the click of a mouse. There is no life to the letters. Each letter looks exactly like the rest and the spacing is rigid and dull. Everyone now has a computer and printer and the ability to print an envelope or document with a tidy and precise font. If everyone can do it then what is so special about it? Your guests end up as just a line in a database.

Hand lettering is alive with personality and passion. Styles are not called "fonts" but rather "hands". Each letter is just a little bit different than the next. The human touch makes each piece unique. Your guests will notice and feel special and important. A hand lettered envelope will be the harbinger of the fabulous event to come. The first impression is priceless.

When choosing a calligrapher, verify that the work will be done by hand. If it is computerized then it is printing and not calligraphy. It may be printing in a calligraphic style but should never be called calligraphy.
